The program aims to explore certain concepts about life and how we relate to the environment. Its design constructs part of the landscape, transforming it into an external shelter, with particular emphasis on structural elements that define the boundary between architecture and nature. It is a private villa located on the northern coast of central Chile, mediated by abundant wild vegetation and a series of tangentially contacted rock clusters, in which voids of various sizes and shapes are created. The design inspiration was to turn these stones into habitable volumes, as well as voids in the different patios that served as part of the project.
Casa Las Vizcachas is the second home of an adult man who hopes to become his permanent residence in the future; this identifies a specific functional area divided into 3 blocks. The largest is the master bedroom with private bathroom, as well as the integrated living room, restaurant and kitchen; the second element is designed for the master's daughter's bedroom, a room and a large bathroom. Both elements are tangentially in contact, but can only be transitioned from one element to another. Later, a third function block was built that rotates slightly to accommodate a small gym.
The entrance is defined by ramps and small patios made up of exposed concrete walls; as you pass through this area, you can see the central courtyard with a perspective. This space is at the heart of the entire program, with different elements that help enhance the experience of living outside. A series of walkways combine volumes and configure different terraces, complemented by a concrete oval that serves as a fireplace and an “endless” pool, which does not extend to the sea but faces the patio, enhancing its position. The house is built on concrete slabs raised from the ground. In addition, the house is 100% designed with laminated wood. All structural components and internal walls are prefabricated in a factory 800 km from the site and transported by truck. This strategy saves construction time and minimizes the impact of the process on the ground. The main frame is laminated pine, while the outer covering is made of ribbed laurel.
At the same time, the interior decoration adopts Coigüe, an intention based on the creation of transparent spaces that connect with the environment and promote the typical relaxing atmosphere of this landscape, but which attracts with its own language, moving away from the usual textures and elements. 9 meters long window elevations separating the social area from the central courtyard, It can be fully opened, forming a single large environment, where the boundaries of each zone seem to be blurred. However, the space is contained and protected thanks to beams, the north wall designed as a wooden grid and other structural elements.
Nature is a gift, something that has always existed, and in this case the house tries to provide a space that provides a feeling of refuge in this vast and inhospitable vast ocean. Landscape beautification programs also follow this logic and basically involve identifying the different native species that grow in the area and creating an effective irrigation system to make them stronger, since the winds here can be brutal most of the year. Around the house, a white shell was used as part of the landscape, as well as a series of rocks extracted from the site, which are now part of the design to commemorate the first entry into the site, and through construction until they became shelters.
