Inspired by the rolling dunes of the Long Island coast, this ocean-view villa has been built by architects using aerospace modeling and manufacturing methods.
The road to the villa winds through a carefully designed landscape of artificial dunes, creating a conversation between the manicured landscape surrounding the estate and the wild, protected natural dune landscape of the beach in the distance. The frameless glass system blurs the separation between interior and exterior living spaces, allowing the surrounding dune terrain seamlessly into the house. The main floor of the dwelling is considered to be a spacious open space with different areas separated by surface treatment.
Featuring an unprecedented fiberglass and foam hardshell construction, the roof spans continuously above the main living space, landing at a few selected points to express important features on the building such as fireplaces and skylights. The roof cantilever's laminated structure weighs only 1/10 of traditional concrete and steel frame structures, and the cantilever is up to 30 feet high, providing shade and frame views of the beach in the distance. Compared to the main space, the bedroom offers a private and comfortable space. The downstairs bedroom is hidden in a sand dune, while the master suite is surrounded by a roof. The walls, floors, and ceilings of these cocoidal spaces are all made with CNC milled endgrain soybean shrubs. The master suite has access to a private rooftop terrace with 360-degree views.
