The main challenge of the project is to adapt the existing building to the modern elements of the rear. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, the original design was typical of the very popular cottage architecture of the early 20th century. As a tribute to the heritage and integrity of existing homes, the design is influenced by the constituent parts and principles of cottage architecture, characterised by a strong horizontal connection between the house and the land, the use of long lines, soft flowing arches and a balanced design.
Located on Coburg's most unique wooded avenue, the expansion partially disguises itself behind its original outline, getting lost in the atmosphere of the green tree-lined streets that surround it... the urban forest of Melbourne's inner north. Driven by adaptability, flexible and experiential in design; with elegant interiors, grand windows, ornate ceilings, bas-reliefs and hardwood floors, the residence is modern based on traditional details, reflecting an idyllic fusion of time and place. The synergy between the new and the old is further enhanced by the use of a neutral and bright palette and movable glass, which is designed to facilitate the flow of the surrounding landscape.
Clients grow up in a close-knit family and are motivated by traditional family values. Since the increased volume creates a passive seating area and open area, sports are drawn to the rear, creating the perfect space for entertainment and socializing. Blurring the boundaries between indoor/outdoor living, the new space witnesses innovative living, dining, and kitchen areas, just like a new fireplace in the home.
