Located in the traditional village of Oia on the island of Santorini, an old house has been thoughtfully updated by Kapsimalis Architects while retaining the existing traditional architectural elements. The design company pays special attention to highlighting the diversity and value of internal spongy and arched spaces, while emphasizing original craftsmanship. VILLAS ON THE VOLCANOES AND THE AEGEAN SEA, FLAT ROOF STRUCTURES OF DIFFERENT LEVELS AND LONG ARCHED BUILDINGS CARVE FAMILIAR SHADOWS ON CLIFF CLIFFS. It is not uncommon in the area for some dwellings to be cavernous. Two skylights let in natural light, further creating an underground feel. The architects mostly retained the arched and amorphous ceilings and curved walls of the interior, just to realign the space to accommodate modern comfortable living.
The exterior of the main building has been preserved and cleverly remodeled, while the exterior courtyard has undergone a modern makeover with a small swimming pool, seating area, and dining under a white metal round umbrella. External stairs lead to the street entrance of the house. Inside, dark gray marble floors and dark oak planks offset the white of the wall stucco.
Some of the furniture is built in and covered with white local cement plaster to further radiate the “cocoon” feel of home. The interior is closely followed by the continuity of warm white walls and gray marble floors, paired with complementary marble, metal and wood furniture. Kapsimalis Architects has carefully renovated this traditional cave house to provide an uncluttered and unique holiday villa that blends harmoniously with the exterior and interior forms of the existing structure.
