No Tree in the Land of Nowhere, Hiromono - Shozo: Getaway
A story of deconstruction and reconstruction, memory and persistence take place on the foggy Gangnam Plain. It all starts with the meeting of an old house that bears the memory of the trustee and a space-time condition.

Memory lead in dark green
Located in Wuxi, Jiangsu, this 850 ㎡ three-storey building is the country house of the owner's father. The owner's father was born in the 60s and grew up here since childhood. Due to the old construction, the owners wanted the architect Tang Ching to rebuild it completely. Once rebuilt, it will still be the home of the owner's father and will also be the second home of the owner's family during his leisure time. “The present state of residence in three generations and the memory of the old house became the clue that the architect had imagined, and an inky green stool placed in the courtyard became a symbol of the memory of the old house.” The dark green stool has accompanied the owner since childhood. The dark green used by the architect was applied to the entrance and entrance walls, extending the color to the three-level master bedroom. One side is a tribute to the houses of the past, which means that even when you create a new home, the precious atmosphere of life in the past is still there. On the other hand, try to fully decompose, translate the original residence of the owner, fully renovate the interior space and explore different forms of application of the same element in the space. “Inky green is again represented in buildings in the form of walls, and that color in memory is now an indispensable part of the supporting beams, expressing the 'locality' of the design through structural dimensions. Space leaves an existing mark and because it can be transformed into a place with memory and a sense of belonging, but where will those old marks go from when it is completely reshaped? Should it serve as a fresh start or as a vehicle for memories? It's more about exploring the kinds of connections that make the final design have its unique soul,” explains designer Tang Ching.
Functional structure
Focus and Continuation
In the living room space, dark green curtain walls are located in the center, forming a visual focus. Surrounding this wall are the living room, restaurant, kitchen, stairwell, gym, and elevator room, which is convenient for the elderly upstairs and downstairs. The wallpaper for the restaurant is from Cole&Son, which uses a theme of trees and shrubs to create a feeling of being surrounded. The stairwell is located directly behind the central curtain wall, from one level straight to the roof. Light is cast on the rotating staircase through the vertical floorboards between the stairs, and the shadow that forms changes over the course of the day.
The dark red staircase, like a ribbon, connects the entire building space, is a symbol of “continuity”. Walk up the stairs and through the small open windows on the left and right walls, you can see the narrative that is happening in the kitchen and gym space.
The bathroom also uses low-saturation color combinations, and the shutters allow enough space to pass through while guaranteeing enough privacy. The toilets in the children's room are equipped with lake green tiles, in a sense a legacy of the owner's childhood memories and a wish to create a good environment for the next generation.
Residential bedrooms are located on the second and third floors, and low-saturated tones create a calm and peaceful emotional space. The room has a wide view and plenty of sunshine. The background behind the master bedroom is wall&decò's old textured wallpaper, and the green texture of the lake is inserted in the middle, as if it were a block of walls left behind by an old building, again hinting at the spatial story line.

Minimalism and light in rural living
With straight white lines on the outside, low saturation colors and simple geometric spaces on the inside, this country house as a whole has the characteristics of modern minimalism, immersing itself in the rural environment of southern China both prominently and harmoniously.
Taking into account the scale of contemporary architecture, the architect designed a two-storey south-facing floor window for the living room. The huge lighting area makes the space on the first floor always clear, with a view of the floor-to-ceiling courtyard, where daylight and weather change become part of indoor living, the boundaries of indoor and outdoor are blurred, and the essence of country life is preserved invisibly. “The whole villa space is like an interpretive theater, where the owner lives, the changes in each scene are the most exciting and beautiful future!”
