Carlyle Designs designed a 139 ㎡ neutral color elegant apartment in Manhattan, NY. The apartment's clients live in Sweden and Spain for a long time, but also want to have a homely home on their frequent trips to New York. The designer created an elegant environment with a charming and timeless space that gives one a sense of tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Clients Johan and Anneli Tjarnberg are avid travelers who have dreamed of owning their own home in Manhattan for years until they finally bought this two-bedroom apartment in a building in 1893. The nearly five-meter ceiling, the classic stucco and the luxurious marble lobby of the house completely captivated the couple. They entrusted the interior design work to their old broker friend Jordan Carlyle. A stark contrast to their more traditional homes in Stockholm and their laid-back holiday home in Spain, which is important for clients that the interiors of the apartments are modern and internationalized. At the same time, they wanted the house to be a “typical New York space.”

The designers decided to draw on the classicism of the building and the artistic spirit of the city, providing the Tjernberg Residence with a complex palette of neutral tones, accentuated by several layers of different textures. So, in the living room, a custom-made silk striped rug, a custom-made cream sofa with hoops, a mahai wool upholstered chair and a table with an oxidized metal tabletop are placed side by side. The bar stool, decorated with textured fleece fabric, adds comfort to the kitchen units in Nakajima and milky white. To link different spaces together, Carlisle layered textures and used solid color schemes. Therefore, in all rooms, walls, ceilings and original styling are painted in the same original color.

One of the tasks is to create an interior that matches the majestic architecture. So adjacent to the dining area of the kitchen, the designer placed an atmospheric custom-sized round marble dining table surrounded by a dining chair, although the space is quite compact. “When you're working in a small space, the key is not to mess with the furniture,” says Jordan Carlyle. The designer shows attention to detail in everything: he has equipped the apartment with everything necessary - from bed sheets to coffee capsules, so that the client's family can immediately stay and enjoy their holidays in New York.
