Shi House is a minimalist residence in Morelia, Mexico, designed by HW Studio. The design integrates two main elements: a stone structure containing stairs and circulation areas, and a pure white horizontal block that accommodates the functional space of the house. The choice of stone not only blends well with the rugged mountain backdrop, but also aims to blend in with the passage of time and the effects of weather conditions. In contrast, the vast white volume stands out, creating a visual dialogue between the natural environment and the architectural form.
The concept is inspired by a principle in some Eastern philosophies in which the opposite and the opposite end enhances the experience of the two. Here, the organic complexity of the lush mountains contrasts sharply with the geometric simplicity of house design. To ensure privacy, the house has solid walls on one side facing the neighbors.
THESE OPENINGS ARE ELEGANTLY COMPOSED OF FLOORS AND ROOFS ONLY, EXTENDING TO THE MAIN SOCIAL AREAS SUCH AS THE LIVING ROOM, RESTAURANT AND KITCHEN. This architectural framing technique enhances the landscape of the canyon, turning the house into a picture frame. Privacy in bedrooms and other private spaces is paramount, these spaces are designed without exterior windows. The social area of the house has a pronounced division from the private area, the hallmark of which is a long corridor. The hallway is defined by a gently curved wall that softens the linear progression and pays homage to the three women in the family. The design of this house looks like it is lightly touched by a mountain body, the end of its base plate seems to float. This delusion is supported by earthen piles excavated at the site, which indicate that the structure is simply sitting on the top of the hill, not fixed on the top of the hill.
