Yatofu Creatives (also Bib Design) is transforming a garden apartment in downtown Shanghai into an urban abode filled with custom art and custom furniture. Hidden in one of Shanghai's most historic neighborhoods, the apartment boasts 180 square meters of interior space and about 150 square meters of private gardens. In keeping with the customer's appreciation of unique custom, Yatofu Knife creates a welcoming, gallery-like living space, where artists and craftsmen collaborate with artists and craftspeople to blend naturally and subtly into the space.

To design a refined, quiet and peaceful home, Yatofu first creates a space like a neutral canvas by cutting out complex architectural details to build a minimalist design language and choosing a range of materials with texture and touch. SOFT BEIGE MICROCEMENT COVERS THE SPACE ELEVATIONS AND CEILINGS, WHILE SOLID WALNUT WALL PANELS AND WOODEN DOORS ADD A LAYER OF WARMTH.

One of the rare features of the apartment is its large private garden. After a design makeover, the garden connects seamlessly with the indoor living space, bringing soft warm light and a Xu Xu breeze into the interior. The design of the garden is as simple as it is, and contrasts sharply with the saturated density of the surrounding city, like a secluded oasis in the midst of a bustling oasis.

THE LIVING AND DINING SPACE BOLDLY ADOPTS HAND-PAVED WATERSTONE FLOORS EMBEDDED IN RECYCLED REPROCESSED BLUE AND NEUTRAL STONEWARE. Behind the dining table, a huge Brazilian pale blue marble wall becomes a bright and fresh focus in the neutral space. The living room creates a cozy atmosphere with a series of curved sofas and armchairs. Many pieces of furniture and art in the Garden Gallery House, including the twig chandelier in the living room center, sculptural metal mirrors in the hallway, and more are custom-designed for this residence. In collaboration with New York ceramic artist Joseph Algieri, a series of handmade pottery is also designed for the space; and the giant print art on the living room walls was created in collaboration with Finnish stylist Piia Emilia and photographer Aleksi Tikkala.

In the bedroom space, solid walnut half-height wall panels wrap the entire space, while the walls display wall art in collaboration with Taiwanese artist/woodworker Moofoo. The master bedroom bathroom, a sculptural bathtub carved out of marble is quietly placed in the middle of the space. Both converted bedrooms are connected by a garden, making this hidden abode in the bustling city of Shanghai even more difficult to see in Shanghai's highly congested city. Yatofu's subtle and detailed design transformations for the Garden Gallery House explored the possibilities of incorporating unique works of art and furniture crafts naturally into life, highlighting the passion for craftsmanship and artistic expression on different scales from interior design to furniture design.
