The Sydney inner city area of Paddington has a picturesque atmosphere. Over the years, it has been a gathering place for makers, thinkers and artists, incorporating an unconscious aesthetic created by creation; Victorian terraced villas, curving warehouses, galleries and restaurants cleverly nestled in the mountains, scattered among the willows and bluebells. In this beautiful corner of the city, a new house was built. The house was designed by Phillip Arnold of Plus Minus Design in collaboration with Sonia van de Haar of Lymesmith and Sue Barnsley of Sue Barnsley Design.
The interior and garden space on the first floor are designed as a whole. The phrase “bring the outdoors indoors” sounds a bit like a designer's metaphor, but it masks the trick to doing it well. This house is indeed so. The stairs leading to the courtyard make the threshold of the house a seat for outdoor gatherings. The glass walls on both sides open to let in light, air and leaves and draw the view out of the venue. Color and plantings are stitched into this space, making them inseparable from the architecture. Landscape design provides the basis for color, while color determines the tone of walls and ceilings. This is a good example of interdisciplinary associative thinking. Sitting in this space looking at the world is special because of this artistry. The roof's design is inspired by a nearby jagged warehouse that blends well with the sense of level surrounding environment.
Three spacious bedrooms and a bathroom are located upstairs and each bedroom has been carefully designed with comfort and privacy in mind. The stairs to the top are carefully winged against the south wall so that they do not invade the ground floor space. This is a simple trick to make the space feel more spacious and the floor quieter. The bright green window frames on the floor break with the traditional color scheme of the area. In such a dense city, in such colorful colors, it is surprising to encounter these quiet points of tranquility as soon as you walk in. However, this highly private residence also gives back to the surrounding environment. As one neighbor said to the owner — “You've renovated the whole street!”
