Houses & Villages

The project is located in an ordinary village on the outskirts of Beijing. It is a typical northern lowland village, consisting of one- to two-storey residential units as basic units. Most of the houses face north and south, with red walls and red tiles, and you can also see a variety of spontaneous additions that are left behind as living needs change. There are various types of sheds with colored steel roofs, with glass roofs, mixed in the natural texture of the countryside. The landlord currently resides in the city, which will serve as a place for family vacations and gatherings with friends. As a new building in the village, we want the transformation to continue to present a state of new and old mix, linking with the village's aesthetics, blending into the landscape of the whole village while creating a rich, natural little world within the yard.

Old house and new log house - a mixture of architectural forms

The old building on the site is a layout of two inpatient spaces, including two sloped roof tile houses and some flat-roofed houses. Based on the site survey, the basic judgment was made: the north house is frequently used and of good quality, should be retained for appropriate modification; the south house, although older, has a certain period value and can be preserved after a certain alteration; other ancillary rooms are temporarily built and can be demolished.

The new building is a continuous, rolling log house that covers the old house in the middle of the site and extends to the south and north sides of the living space, forming a new courtyard architectural layout. The log house forms as the old roof slopes up to form two continuous ridges, corresponding respectively to the living room and restaurant below, the main public space for living in the kitchen. Two flat-roofed houses extend under the eaves of the log house, adding ancillary features such as two bedrooms, a storage room, a toilet. The old house on the north side chose to expose its roof structure and divide the interior into two bedrooms and living space. The intervention of log houses amplifies the change in the level of roof pitch and forms new and old mixed relationships on the building mass level.

Courtyard and Indoor - A Mix of Behavioral Activities

The courtyard layout of the original binomintone was dispersed to form six courtyards with different dimensions, landscapes and functions. The front yard is set in the southwest corner of the site, with a metal door opening, and a bamboo path leads people to the entrance to the house. As a result, the entrance hall is facing a small courtyard, with a beautiful red maple that shines in the curtains, displaying natural colors in different seasons, becoming a focal point between the living room and the restaurant. The living room and the south side of the courtyard are left out of the courtyard, and there are stones in the courtyard. In good weather, the folding door of the living room can be fully extended, including the interior of the courtyard.

Head north into the old house, where the restaurant and kitchen are separated. The old wooden roof is contrasted with the new wooden roof. The restaurant forms a bamboo courtyard with the walls of the neighboring houses. Dining activities extend to the courtyard, where you can enjoy food tea in the bamboo forest. Entering the back yard through the restaurant, the courtyard is the main outdoor activity yard. It transitions through a semi-outdoor corridor to the courtyard, where large trees are planted in the courtyard. You can relax in the outside porch or chat under the big tree. Continue backwards into the bedroom area where the north house is connected by a glass gallery between the north house and the log house, separating a narrow courtyard from the natural area. All three bedrooms have direct outdoor views to meet the needs of lighting and ventilation while avoiding distractions. The setting of different courtyards gives a natural vitality to every corner of the interior.

Structure and Materials - A Mix of New and Old

The new log house uses cedarwood as the main material. The structure takes the form of a mirrored, beam-like structure, in response to the woodworking tradition of northern folk houses. Making the most of this low-carbon, renewable natural building material, laminated wood continues the timbers of old houses with a new structure, creating a dialogue between the new and the old at the structural level. Achieve continuous rolling roofs with minimal beam column sections and as wide a span as possible, ensuring reasonable construction while controlling manufacturing costs. The new fence walls are all built using locally recycled old red brick and green bricks, and also enable the recycling of old materials that have been discarded. During the renovation of the old house, the remaining exterior wall of the north house was kept in white tiles, and the site decided to remove the abrasion, exposing the original red brick wall. The local roof of the south house was severely damaged during demolition, and the walls were also at risk of collapse. Therefore, the frame was renovated and some wooden elements were replaced, and the walls were rebuilt using old green bricks in their original form. The doors and windows are combined with fixed hollow glass and bamboo steel sheet to open the fan shape. A solid open fan meets ventilation requirements, while fixed glass windows maintain the integrity of the view. The interior fixed furniture is also all custom made of bamboo steel sheet. Laminated wood, bamboo steel and old wooden beams form a new and old mixed relationship between wood materials. The floor is laid with purchased new red brick, which has a better waterproof and dust-proof effect. The roof is made of metal leech tiles, which has a light load, long service life and low cost. The red surface of the metal tiles is mixed with the red tiles common in the village. The construction of the yard, the renovation of the structure, the reuse of materials, the design attempts to create a sustainable design strategy that evolves in a new and old era, striking a balance between personality characteristics, landscape coordination, manufacturing price controls, and providing new possibilities for the renewal of rural buildings.
