“It's not a place to show off, it's a place where my soul rests,” 37-year-old Colombian reggae superstar José Álvaro Osorio Balvin called J Balvin in a magazine article. “It's about creating something with nature. Like everything in life, simple things are the most magical.”

The villa was recently completed in Medellin, his Colombian birth city. J Balvin fosters a perceived bad boy vibe with his sometimes controversial views, colorful hair, countless tattoos, and garish outfits, but he also understands that he needs a counterpart to balance his busy and crazy global superstar lifestyle. He said he wanted to create a sanctuary of balance, peace and inspiration. Casa Aire is J Balvin's third residential collaboration with the Medellin architecture and design studio Cinco Solidos (5Sólidos), which was founded in 2019 by Daniel Correa, Maria José Fernandez and Elisa Ortega.

A low, forest-green, tubular sofa designed by Pierre Paulin of France (1927-2009) in 1967 for Italian manufacturer La Cividina occupies the entire space in the living room, which leads entirely to the outside terrace. On the sides of the sofa are two large and thick lime panels that serve as a coffee table. Two marble tables add up to 2 tons and it takes 15 people to put them in place. The restaurant has a strong mid-century leaf minimalist style, and oak Buffala chairs designed by Kristian Sofus Hansen and Tommy Hyldahl for Norr11 are located on either side of a Cinco Solidos-designed table. Only one piece of art decorates the room directly to the terrace: a painting by Colombian artist Christian Abside.

The design process is not as complex as they were from scratch because of the long-standing partnership between designers and their clients. The basic principles are clear to everyone; a minimalist open concept, a Zen Japanese atmosphere that connects everything with the lush nature and magnificent mountain scenery around it. Therefore, Japanese waterscapes, bonsai and Spanish olive trees, arranged according to Japanese aesthetics, are unique and important design elements in the house, as well as minimalist furniture. In addition to his award-winning music career, J Balvin is known for his collaborations with Latin musicians including Benito 'Bad Bunny' Martinez, Nicky Jam and Daddy Yankee. He also convinced other superstars, including Beyonce, Ed Hylan, and Farrell Williams, to sing along with him in Spanish. He has also worked with fashion brands Louis Vuitton, Prada and Supreme, the animated TV series character SpongeBob and artist Murakami Lung.
