Set next to a lake in the German Bavarian countryside, this family home combines the rustic charm of a forest hut with the simple sophistication of modern architecture. Zurich-based Appels Architekten designed a wedge-shaped volume covered in dark wood and interrupted by large rectangular windows that cleverly stand out in the green environment while making it feel like it belongs there. The sculptural feel of the building is continued inside, with three white wooden boxes containing bedrooms hanging above the open public space. Combining the structure's sloping roof and placed glass openings, this simple and ingenious layout allows the common area to expand horizontally and vertically, introducing sunlight into the depths of the house, and directing the landscape to any favorable location opposite the garden and lake.
Blending harmoniously with the dark exterior of the house, the light-toned interiors — think painted white walls and ceilings, light grey water-polished floors and natural wood furniture — enhance the natural light pouring in from floor to ceiling and the balcony doors and windows of the terrace. Evergreen view from everywhere. Hardwood floors and wood paneling add warmth to the upstairs bedroom, green tiles add a refreshing feel to the small wellness area on the bottom, while the bare concrete surface of the basement gives the space a dungeon-like feel.
