The site is a typical Flemish residence located in the same typical suburb bordering the countryside. The client is a retired art book publisher who wants to bring his collection home. The design proposes an independent building entity: a wedge-shaped volume that covers metal. It was conceived as a library, a space completely surrounded by wooden racks, bearing books and a roof. The space is open to the back garden and the adjacent meadow.
The extension is partially secured to the side of the existing building. The inclined position of the new facade makes the volume disappear to a large extent from the angle of the street, maintaining the type of detached house. From the inside, the sloping walls open the view to the rear, where a large full-width window frames the garden and landscape. The adjacent location also preserves maximum visibility of the existing building behind it, while maximizing the newly built surface. Therefore, the connection with the house is carried out at the corner. An existing window here was converted into a passageway, and a new skylight made up for the local sunshine. THE ELEVATION IS COVERED WITH GALVANIZED STEEL PLATES AND HAS A VERTICAL RHYTHM, ALLOWING THE GARDEN STORAGE ROOM AND ENTRANCE DOOR TO BE SEAMLESSLY INTEGRATED. The material references the barn doors of nearby agricultural buildings, reflecting the surrounding green plants and the color of the sky.
