This apartment is a weekend loft, close to the historic center of Bratislava. In its original state, it has hidden potential and a beautiful view of the Art Nouveau monument known as the “Blue Church”. Kilo Honč is not looking for design or elaborate craftsmanship for this apartment, which is not important for Kilo Honč because it will not bring you a happy experience. For Kilo Honč, it is mainly about the landscape, the opening, the atmosphere, the location, the light and the shadow. Therefore, these materials are basically transparent and functional. Kilo Honč makes the open space striking with its high ceilings.
The initial standard layout offered a separate bathroom, a low plasterboard ceiling and all possible hidden wiring and technology, and a wall-mounted kitchen with a view of the blue church behind it. By removing the ceilings, reconfiguring the technical infrastructure and inserting mezzanines, the space becomes a fully functional apartment with a separate night area and comfortable stairs. The attic space further expands the building area by about 15 ㎡. By using translucent glass brick walls between the bathroom and the new kitchen, sunlight is introduced into the kitchen area, making the space visually larger. The same wall separates the bathroom and the other has a shower. The apartment is equipped with only the most basic items and is spacious. Inside there is a 1.2-meter sofa bed, instead of the traditional sofa, the wide white wall is used as a projection screen, not to place a large TV.
Kilo Honč likes that there is no need for strict order in the apartment, when a person constantly interacts with the surrounding environment and allows it to be rediscovered and modified over time. Designers are delighted when a space encourages creativity, when its properties can be changed without loss of quality, when it offers people a variety of different scales of interaction.
