Studio Prineas has redesigned this residence in McMahons Point, Sydney, with a relaxed interior layout with beautiful harbour views. Clients want a space they can comfortably occupy — a relaxed family home that offers light, connectivity and endless harbour views.
This 170 ㎡ residence spans four floors. Initial plans didn't really take full advantage of this incredible venue, so Studio Prineas aims to reconfigure the space to take full advantage of it while providing a relaxing and uplifting feeling. The homes are streamlined by designers and infused with a sense of ceremony into each space, better connecting the family to the endless Sydney Harbour views at a glance. The decision to use existing 1980s building enclosures was made early, with designers taking care to preserve neighbors' views and minimize changes that would require lengthy Council approval. Therefore, reconfiguring the layout and refining architectural expression with artificial Victorian terrace features is a core priority for Studio Prineas.
Designers stripped away the decor and instead opted for a more modern, sophisticated expression. Dark wood trim, white rendering, black steel and stone create a sense of peace and elegance. A major move is to relocate the main living area upstairs, so it can now enjoy spectacular harbour views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Taking into account the limitations of the heritage reserve, the designers opened up the roof space without changing the enclosing structure of the building, creating a towering ceiling volume.
Due to limited floor space, a custom island table with built-in dining table is an integral part of making the space feel spacious and flexible, while remaining light and transparent. Since minimization of land area is considered, the design of the loop is key in planning. The vertical layout of the dwelling is connected by an internal elevator, and the elevator is wrapped by stairs, forming a clear circulation area. The circular movement allows the view to be borrowed through internal and external spaces, as well as between interior and exterior spaces, making the home feel more level.
