Driving north 30 km north, the scenery in front of you is very different from the international city. In this mountainous area of Changping, KiKi Architectural Design Bureau completed a transformation of a “house in the wilderness” over 15 months. It carries a pleasant time in the wild life of the owner's childhood, looking for not the specific things in the memory, but the memory itself.
Lush forests and mirror-like lakes provide a natural barrier to isolate the bustle and bustle of the home, which is a direct factor in attracting owners to this property. The original site of 1300 square meters, which included a large courtyard and 200 square meters of European-style buildings, was the incongruous contradiction that sparked the team's idea of reinventing the garden. After analyzing and reviewing the site, KiKi decided to reconstruct the connection between the house and the surface, which includes many dimensions, such as the relationship between the surface and the building, the relationship between the appearance of the house and the surrounding environment, the relationship between interior and exterior functions and the home experience, and more. The team took full advantage of the 8m difference in terrain. The garden area at the bottom and the houses at the top were gently connected by landscape elements to create a visually rich level and set the tone for “freedom and fun” for the whole project.
Under the premise of not destroying the structure of the building, the European-style façade is thoroughly stripped away and replaced by concise geometric blocks and rustic northern red brick. Without the cumbersome eaves, tiles and window panes, the house reverts to its original form, as if it were a child who had been staring blankly, showing its unassuming appearance. At the main entrance on the east side, the original protruding portico is hidden behind a hollow brick wall and cleverly combines the concept of film walls with brickwork, adding privacy while also realizing the semi-outdoor hot tub function.
Step inside, one floor is the main living area and the second floor is a private lounge. In minimalist terms, the irregular interlacing of functions, structures and materials makes the whole interior fun. The application of materials such as logs and microcement responds to the simple environment of the Yamano, while the red brick element, which appears locally, is an extraction of the building itself. To create a natural living atmosphere, KiKi uses a large area of glass folding doors that wrap around the exterior area of the building, which both introduces ample light to the house and blurs the boundaries of the interior and exterior, enhancing the user's intimacy with nature. At the same time, the staircase landscape element in the garden continues indoors in the form of an arched floor. When the glass doors are fully opened, the distance between the restaurant, living room, tea room and the outside disappears, and one gains greater fluidity in the space, and a sense of tranquility permeates the space at all times.
A wild air that spreads in the outdoor garden. The flower-frame corridor at the entrance, with a “human” font skeleton and lattice structure, corresponds to the roof shape of the building subject, and dense vines become its cuticle, like a “green shade device”. At the end, an old persimmon tree stands in front of the door, symbolizing the excitement of the past of order. On the north side of the house, a multi-tiered arched terrace with terraces spread downwards, forming a place for some fun and games. Small observation houses and square brick pavilions, like two floating “islets”, provide a great place for families to enjoy the view of Nayao. A stone path around the outermost end runs through the front and back yard, perfecting the outdoor traffic lines and providing a serene ambience.
With a landscape design that is both open and secretive, KiKi wants to weaken the edges of the building through changes in terrain and vegetation, adding a wild, natural twist to the home. Therefore, we specially invite an experienced plant design team - wilderness landscape design to create a landscape of plants that grow naturally from environmental analysis, soil improvement, plant growing season, maintenance costs, etc. There is no deliberate planning of planting zones and boundaries in the garden, suitable for northern climate mangroves, wolf sage, creating a sense of dullness; low ferns with tiger needles, swaying growth; purple mountain peaches and hydrangeas that bring elegant color... everything is a pleasure to watch.
So far, a home wrapped in a garden is fully presented, the good memories are reasserted, and the home is transformed into a multi-tiered, three-dimensional space that grows in the countryside, it is free and breathable from the inside out. Here, everyone can relax as much as possible, enjoy the stillness and passage of time, as if you were in the wilderness, honest and real.
