Gordon Cullen, in his book The Concise Townscape, said: “A building standing in the countryside is perceived as a work of architecture, but combining six buildings together makes art other than architecture possible. “
In Serial Vision Home, a large and wide corridor is the backbone of the space. The walls of the house are understood as a whole structure that creates a sense of transition when passing through them, giving each room a unique personality and atmosphere. In this sense, the walls of this Barcelona residence have become a metaphor for the Cullen complex.
Through Layered Transitions: Matter as a Tool for Creating Intuitive Spaces
As humans, we are deeply influenced by our surroundings, effortlessly shaping our perceptions and changing our attitudes based on the space we inhabit. In Serial Vision Home, materiality plays a dominant role in helping to meet these premises and covers two basic functions: setting the atmosphere of the home and making each space intuitively identifiable. Soothing palettes take over walls, ceilings and floors, making these purposes apparent. This combination of hues creates a naturally pleasant environment; a sense of calm fills this space.
The walls are painted with a natural mortar using an inflatable lime base, which changes color according to the light, and in the brightest rooms, apply a beige white paint. The floor is laid with wood, in some areas such as bathrooms, the floors are built with stone. As the user moves from one end to the other, these combinations of materials, lights, and colors change, forming a different experience as they pass through the wall layers of Serial Vision Home.
Viewpoint Issues: Distribution in Serial Vision Home
Serial Vision Home is defined as a long and wide corridor that transitions through the house as the main axis. Since there are several rooms on both sides, this space is conceptually cut in half to distinguish two main areas: day and night. First turn to one of Barcelona's most vibrant streets, which is vibrant from dawn to dusk. In the first half we find the living room, the restaurant, the kitchen, the open study, the multifunction room and the toilet. When transitioning to the night zone, the spindle hits its thinnest point in the center, opens again, and expands into a large and quiet park. The master bedroom and bathroom, studio, games room, and an additional bedroom and bathroom make up the back half of the building.
The house takes advantage of the depth of the large corridor to emphasize the separation between the zones. In the upper half, areas such as living rooms and restaurants appear active due to their brightness, and from this point to the night area, the colors of the spaces change one by one to help understand their role. Again, with the help of light, texture, and color palette, users can monitor mood changes throughout Serial Vision Home.
The Link Between Spaces: Walls as Tools for Gathering and Interweaving
Each area in Serial Vision Home is created to adapt to the needs, nature, and life of the user. The day area, in particular, is made up of four separate spaces (living room and restaurant, study and kitchen), whose design brings their traditional functions together now inwardly. The result is a transparent area for users to go about their daily lives, leaving enough space to move around.
This feeling is achieved by trying to open up these previously closed spaces; all the doors are demolished, leaving only two blocked walls, so a physical and dynamic visual connection is formed when passing through them.
