ZROBIM architects | Belarus Primwood+Clear Concrete Landscape Villa in Minsk

Matski House is a landscape villa in Minsk, Belarus, designed by ZROBIM architects. Architects are committed to a unique experimental approach that embodies the challenges owners face and effectively solve during project development. Initially, the property included a garbage dump, cleverly transformed into two enticing artificial ponds. This transformation not only adds aesthetic value but also contributes to the revitalization of the community. In addition, the architect's deep respect for the surrounding environment is evident in the design. Taking advantage of the significant difference in site height, the result is an extraordinary cantilevered house that extends 4.5 meters at the edge — a bold architectural feat that adds a unique and adventurous character to the structure. In order to harmonize with the environment, the owner plans to plant crops on the roof of the house and seamlessly integrate all the necessary technical equipment into the roof space.

This approach makes the most of available space and emphasizes the owners' commitment to sustainable living and experimentation. Designed with thoughtful light direction and heat engineering, the south-western elevation features expansive panoramic glazing (65% of the wall area) offering magnificent views of the integrated natural environment. Instead, the north elevation is deliberately kept simple to minimize heat loss on the shade side. Using passive solar heating, floors and internal partitions are built of solid concrete, enhancing thermal inertia and maintaining a good small climate inside half-timbered houses. The center of the residence is an atrium with a nut tree—an ever-changing element that reflects the seasons, connecting residents to the natural cycle.

The existence of this tree extends to every room in the house. THIS CENTRAL COURTYARD ALSO INFLUENCES THE LAYOUT OF THE HOUSE, IT IS FLUID, WITHOUT CORRIDORS, ALLOWING DIFFERENT PATHS IN THE SPACE. The height of the ceiling is proportional to the size of the room, and the white ceiling in the hallway and corridor is 2.5 meters high, creating a feeling of openness. In contrast, the living area has a ceiling of 3 meters high, decorated with carefully crafted wooden boards on the ceiling, which are individually made and can be removed for use with hidden utilities. Monochrome palettes go well with naturally selected materials: warm tones of wood in ceilings and furniture, overall arched concrete and polished metal trim. Impressively, 95% of the furniture and fixtures are tailored to the owner's unique design, infusing a natural minimalist feel to the interior.
