Hidden in the bustling heart of London is a tranquil haven of 20 floors. Beautifully designed by Tuckey Design Studio, Bough Terrace Apartments perfectly blend Japanese aesthetics with modern minimalism to create a stunning urban haven. This article will take you deep into this unique space and learn how designers transform a poor apartment into an art-like residence.

Renovated background The Bough Terrace Apartments are located in the centre of London and are in poor condition. At the end of 2020, a frequent visitor to and from London bought the property after an online visit during the pandemic lockdown. The apartment used to suffer from water problems, lack of natural light, and cluttered interior partitions. Customers want to transform it into a private residence that can replace the hotel, while also serving as an ideal place to display their personal art collections.

Design concept Architects Ryuta Hirayama and Dan Stilwell of Tuckey Design Studio took on this challenging project. Their design concept revolves around the silent Japanese aesthetic and aims to create a space far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. The design is inspired by Kyoto's Kōryū Shrine, with a focus on preserving and displaying the apartment's original wooden lattice structure.

Space layout The apartment consists of three floors, each of which has been carefully designed:

  1. Ground floor: Kitchen area
  • Dark wood ceiling plinth
  • DEBRIS CONCRETE FLOORING
  • Cast concrete countertops
  • Custom Cabinets and Open Shelves
  • Part of the wall and the study form a soft partition
  1. 1st Floor: Master Bedroom and Suite
  • Contrast of dark roof truss with plywood ceiling forming
  • WOODEN PLATFORM BED WITH STORAGE DRAWER UNDERNEATH
  • SKYLIGHT INTRODUCES NATURAL LIGHT
  • Custom Japanese-style soaking tub with Iroco wood faucet
  • Natural resin finish enhances tranquility
  1. Top floor: Living room and common area
  • PLYWOOD ROOF
  • Light pattern on a two-tier high wall
  • Midnight Blue Main Staircase Becomes Visual Focus

Design Highlights

  1. Material Use: Designers cleverly use natural materials such as white walls, stone, wood, concrete, and exposed brick to create a rich visual effect. The combination of new and old wood creates a unique sense of layering, adding depth and fun to the space.
  2. Light treatment: The design of the entire apartment prioritizes light and air flow. Light, intermittent interventions project unexpected patterns of light onto the two-tiered walls, adding a dynamic aesthetic to the space.
  3. Stair Design: The main staircase is dyed in midnight blue, which becomes the highlight of the entire space. IT IS MADE OF HAND-FOLDED PLYWOOD, THE CURVES ARE BEAUTIFUL, AND THE SNAKE-SHAPED HANDRAIL CORRESPONDS TO ITS SHAPE. The staircase is built by custom-made shippers, and the fasteners are cleverly hidden, demonstrating exquisite craftsmanship.
  4. Japanese Elements: The custom Japanese-style soaking tub and Iroco wood faucets perfectly embody the essence of Japanese silent aesthetics, providing users with a private space to relax and relax.
  5. Art Show: The designers have carefully created a background suitable for the display of art, making the apartment not just a residence, but a private art gallery.
