Jaque Studio | 174m2, Silent aesthetic villa in Tulum, Mexico

The initial approach is based on the quality offered by the site, since it has a natural spring in the center of the property, from which the large leaves of tropical trees benefit, and the terrain of the area is very curious, usually flat.

With an “L” shape design, this villa is solved in a single storey, designed to open up existing water bodies to the north and take advantage of jungle views. The house is mainly a narrow section with natural light and cross ventilation in each space. The tropical setting is the protagonist, the four-bedroom bathroom is even solved in the private open-air courtyard. The main corridor that connects the whole house also serves as a large terrace, a reference to Mexican mansions and country houses, these types of spaces usually have dual functions, connecting and serving as living areas. The house is resolved on a single level allowing high ceilings, cooler interior space and a wide exterior view.

The house is 100% self-sufficient, generating energy from batteries and solar panels, treating sewage with a wetland network, and using the site's water through filtration and softening equipment. Likewise, 77% of the property's surface area has been protected by native trees and plantings. The project uses local architectural solutions and finishes such as limestone and chukum; however, wood is the main element used. Jaque Studio believes that just as steel and concrete are the building materials of the 20th century, wood will also become the material of the 21st century.

Because it is a renewable resource, light in weight and low carbon footprint, its physical characteristics make it an ideal choice to withstand the climatic conditions of the region. Likewise, its aesthetic characteristics help create a warm and comfortable environment that is beneficial to the health of people who live in these types of spaces. Casa Tropical is a project that extends to the entire landscape and aims to capture the beauty that the place has to offer. It is a building rooted in the ground and, as a bystander to the natural environment, the materials and finishes blend with the surrounding environment, providing an opportunity to relax and enjoy each space.
