The apartments transformed from industrial buildings convey the essence of a gallery or artist's studio, designed to encourage “strolling” and interaction.
Set in a low-rise tower in Sydney's Surry Hills — formerly used for storage and commercial use — NoMad is described as an “urban refuge” by the couple living there. As avid travelers, the couple wanted a place that would make them feel grounded and calm, with a space in which they could fully immerse themselves. Completing this task is the interior design studio Alexander &CO. , its workspace is located in the nearby suburb of Bondi Junction.
The shell of the three-room duplex apartment has typical features of industrial construction: concrete floors, high ceilings and exposed trusses, wide structural columns and factory-made steel-framed windows. Alexander & Co. There is no attempt to reduce these features. Choose to commemorate them in a more modern way.
“The structure enclosing structure has a beautiful scale reminiscent of its industrial heritage. However, it lacks the amenities of an apartment suitable for living, and now the latter has been modified, the historical feature of the building being the pillar of its design; the floors provide visual weight, the ceilings create depth, the pillars enlarge the internal proportions, and the windows generate continuity.
The theme that underpins interior design is roaming — traversing space and thought. “These spaces were conceived as artists' studios; a series of bold handmade shapes coordinate with each other, replicating the experience of the gallery, residents engaging in two-way dialogue with the lifeless environment around them; the existence of materials, furniture and artwork all to tell a story. “—Alexander &CO.
