A series of towering structures in line with the White Pine Grove near Wilson, Wyoming, this mountain home provides a creative retreat for a California couple. Located at the bottom of the Teton Mountains, this 35-acre estate contains several ecosystems where the pristine forest blends with pines and junipers before transitioning into rolling grassland. Homeowners are writers who own and run an independent record label in Mill Valley, California, and they want to find a nature-oriented place in Wyoming where they practice writing.
The residence consists of three buildings (the main house, guest house and writer's studio), arranged in a set of simple box-shaped volumes, each of which is designed according to its specific location. The 6000 square foot main house is considered a geological relic in the landscape, located on the edge between fields and forests. The 1577-square-foot rooms and 580-square-foot writer's studio are more closely entwined in a wooded setting. The fourth spirit-centered building has not yet been built and will be located further south. The building is open and offers panoramic views of the Great Teton Mountains, wildlife, forests and grasslands.
In a straight line on the plane, the main house seems to grab the surrounding trees as anchors, sink in the center, and pull up to the sky at the corners. IN HARMONY WITH THE LANDSCAPE, THIS DYNAMIC QUALITY IS FURTHER EMBODIED BY THE BURNED FIR EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING, CREATING GAPS AND OPENINGS THROUGH PULLING AND CARVING. The entrance to the residence is located where the structure extends into a low-lying creek, and the clear glass on the floor reveals this relationship. The wooden exterior wraps around the inside, forming a light-colored Atlantic cedar, and then dissolves in fine plaster and floor glass.
From every window you can see the grasslands and the Teton Mountains in the distance. The east-facing fireplace contrasts with the landscape, and the private courtyard allows south-facing light to penetrate the center of the house. In addition to the communal kitchen, living room and restaurant, the home also includes three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a laundry room and a spacious storage room for the use of the customer's Irish Wolfhounds. WOOD, STEEL, BRONZE, CUSTOM-CAST WHITE CONCRETE, BLEACHED CEDAR, ULTRA SLAB OF LIMESTONE AND MAGENTA DEFINE THE PALETTE OF THE MATERIAL. The floor of the main bathroom is made of Italian limestone, and the floor of the custom bathtub also uses Italian limestone, which cuts water jets from a piece of limestone to create striking overall sculptural design elements.
This is the interior designer's second time working with clients, the first time at their home in Mill Valley. The client's Bohemian lifestyle and love for music, literature and the outdoors are the inspiration behind the interior design. They love comfort, quality and texture, they love vintage clothes, they like one that invites family and friends, and that they can leave their dogs at home relaxed enough. Each surface is enhanced with artisan details such as custom designs around the fireplace, tattoo-inspired light embossed concrete, hand-painted custom wallpaper murals, and geometric patterns that run through the entire design. A palette of earthy tones — mustard, blush and deep burgundy — is dotted with collectibles, antiques and contemporary art.
The bedrooms are steps away from the main house, with similar carved entrances and straight lines. The writer's studio is just behind, forming a formal contrast with the rest of the structure. Surrounded by white pine trees, this two-story sentry building includes living space on the first floor and studios on the second floor, where residents can immerse themselves in the canopy.
