Franklin Street is a minimalist apartment in Tribeca, New York, designed by Timothy Godbold. Under the guidance of Pulitzer Prize winner Sako, this two-storey residence has been redesigned to accommodate the lifestyle of a contemporary family with two children. This renovation aims to achieve a dual goal: to create a cozy space suitable for social gatherings, while ensuring that the house remains functional and comfortable, suitable for everyday family life.
Timothy Godbold, the designer involved in this project, has a detailed understanding of how to balance the industrial heritage of a home with the needs of modern living when completing this task. A major challenge is the integration of the large industrial columns located in the center of the double-height living room — an element that, while striking in the building, also presents potential layout problems.
Godbold's innovative solution is to secure the dining table to the column, an option that not only solves space challenges but also pays tribute to the industrial history of the building. Further renovations include transforming the TV room behind the kitchen into a multi-purpose bar and office space, enhancing the home's versatility. Godbold's design concept emphasizes simplicity and clarity, using concise lines and minimalist palettes to magnify the architectural drama of the space. His strategic use of scale and layout maximizes the visual impact of existing structures, making drama a central theme of his work. Drawing on medieval Italian aesthetics and decorative arts movements, Godbold's design pays homage to the surreal elements of 1970s black cinema, creating a captivating atmosphere.
