Deletion is a simple, precise expression

The project is a penthouse duplex located on the outskirts of Shanghai. It offers a great view of the remote Lujiazui to the outside and a relaxing atmosphere hidden from the city to the inside. The landlady is a well-known business executive, and she wants it to be a quiet and rustic living space after her retirement. “The physical space of the dwelling is the externalization of the human and spiritual world.” We used a psychological analysis approach as a design entry point, to visualize the inner workings of the customer through a questionnaire about lifestyle habits, likes, and vices, and ultimately identified the following design strategy: to make the spatial relationship concise and clear by removing simple operations, while at the same time, through composition and vision, Precise control of color and detail to respond to the demands of richness.

Theme

The living room has two floors high and has floor glass throughout, allowing this space with the highest frequency of activity to have plenty of natural light. We do not want people to create a sense of scale loss in such an oversized space, so the visual center of gravity of the living room is deliberately lowered, controlling one's perception in the lower levels of the entire space. The walls and the top are transitioned with arcs, which to some extent also blur the upper boundary of the space. One side of the staircase is designed as the most important “setting” in the living space. The first floor of the house functions mainly for public activities such as living rooms, restaurants, and the second floor is a very private space for the master bedroom, tea room, etc. So stairs as a transition between public and private, naturally have the metaphor of “rising” and “closing”. We extrapolate this implicit relationship into a geometrical abstract expression: a tall solid background wall has a sloping wall in front of a tall solid background, and one descends along the sloping line in the morning, unfolds the plot of the day; and at night, one steps up and returns to one's inner world behind the scenes. Three windows in the living room introduce natural light from different angles and heights, and the interweaving of arcs of the walls and light maps a dynamic theater of light. The hard lines of the stairs are in dialogue with the gentle curves of the walls, supporting each other.

narrative

We created the two-storey bedroom scene with a deep narrative feel. The cross-shaped space structure organizes the surrounding bedrooms, corridors, piano rooms, dressing rooms. The cross center, which is composed of four “pillars”, provides visual guidance for the eye, leading it along the axis into various spaces. The visual gallery is the key to this longitudinal structure, as the same precise visual bridge that links functional spaces with precise proportions and rhythm. One side of the wall features a full-length walk-through mirror, creating a realistic and virtual interweaving effect that further magnifies the depth of space. The walls are painted with a warm iridescent, and traces of manual application during the construction process are preserved. Other main materials include natural wood bark and natural cave stones. We want to awaken the subtle sense of nature and time for people in space through this rich and random texture.
