Argo is a sophisticated family villa that makes the most of every square millimeter of its 214 square meters of compact inner-city space. Design and volume carefully edit and address the difficult planning interface for each boundary and organization, designed to overcome the challenges associated with a south-facing backyard. All ground space and circulation surrounds a north-facing courtyard that is not only a popular focus of the residential entrance sequence, but also deeply infuses natural light into the primary living space of this high-quality residence.

Curved stone, plasterboard, ashen, and tile walls, combined with two highly sculpted staircases, provide a gentle transition, giving the home a spacious space that contrasts with the compact floor area of the residence. The details and proportions of the interior are elegant and refined, and come alive with several excellently positioned skylights, a mottled privacy screen and an electric glass roof hatch.

Although the site is small, the house does not sacrifice outdoor space. Four different exterior spaces were designed: the front garden, the central courtyard, the rear garden, and the roof terrace overlooking the central business district and South Yarra. Fine woodwork, cement reveal, kick baseboard, and steel frame joist are all aligned to create a horizontal base, creating subtle aesthetic and formative cohesion between materials and rooms.
