Created by the lagging and continuous action of Bahia's waters, the cliffs of Trancoso rise before charming beaches and vibrant colors. Vista House is located on top of one of them. The 46-meter high cliff, from a bird's perspective, is designed to create a landscape like a wide-angle camera. The horizontal scale of Vista House is depicted by the extrusion of part of a cottage element, which produces a structure 60 meters long. THE EDGE OF THE HOUSE IS AN ENCLOSED VOLUME, INCLUDING THE MASTER SUITE AND KITCHEN, WHICH OPENS TO THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE THROUGH A HUGE WIDESCREEN SPAN OVERLOOKING THE INFINITE BLUE.
Makes the 45-meter-long gap a tactile organic balance between the metal structure and the material surrounding it. THE ELEVATION OF THIS EXTERNAL STRUCTURE IS WRAPPED BY STRIPS OF GRAY EUCALYPTUS — REMINISCENT OF THE TRADITIONAL MATERIAL MADE FROM THE THIN LONG BRANCHES OF THE BIRIBA TREE IN NORTHEAST BRAZIL — WHICH SEEM TO GROW ON THE ELEVATION LIKE PETRIFIED ROOTS. The roof, on the other hand, is made of recycled wood, and the tiles are handmade piece by piece.
Under the roof, an open-air balcony runs through the entire span, connecting the garden on both sides and surrounding a white lower box. As a house in a house, the box contains three bedrooms, a small study, a bathroom and a living room surrounded by perforated Viroc board — a dense composite of wood and cement. Independent of the main structure, this interior can be fully opened when the Viroc panel is used as a folding screen.
This loose texture and white palette of materials interact favorably with sunlight and surrounding colors. The exterior landscape changes the texture of the interior space by refracting and reflecting light, creating a dramatic effect of light and shadow on every surface, especially through biriba boards and Viroc perforated walls.
Vista House converses in a balanced way, using local materials and furniture with bold structures and engineered finishes. The intense colors of nature are filtered and framed by a soft palette. Closed volumes open to open-air platforms and corridors. Precise boundaries are eventually blurred by this pervasive way of life.
