Located in Modernist Colfield, the original structure is a 1970s two-story house that needs rethinking. At the same time as contemporary expansion for the growing family design, the modernist beginnings of reference homes were key to the design requirements, but with the acquisition of the second plot of land to the south, the initial single-storey two-storey addition was transformed into a two-storey -site, single-level extension. Landscape designers are involved early in the design phase to ensure a comprehensive vision for the expansion of the site.
Blurring the distinction between existing structures and new structures is a thoughtful strategy designed to create a unified building entity. A ONCE DARK ENCLOSED BASEMENT WITH AN ORIGINAL ELEVATED ENTRANCE WAS REBUILT TO CREATE A NEW GROUND PORCH BEHIND THE ORIGINAL ARCH, AMPLE LIGHT AND CONNECTED TO THE LANDSCAPE. Spaces in the home — the spacious kitchen, lounge, sunken living room and glass dining area — are designed to maximise versatility and garden, providing a haven for the whole family, making it easy to transition from the public area to the private area, inside and out. The popular aesthetic is a delicate balance between the new and the old: white concrete floors go well with original millstones and bright blue plush carpets, wood linings surround the interior, and orange velvet sofas pay tribute to the family's history. The same goes for custom bronze glass and plush carpets in sunken pits. The original glass skylight has been scaled up in proportion and wrapped in a wood-lined ceiling to connect with nature.
Skylights minimize the need for artificial lighting and are just one of the principles of sustainability that always permeates. Solar panels, hot water and pool heating offset daily energy consumption, as well as extensive insulation, high-performance double-glazed windows and exterior shutters. The integrated heating inside the exposed concrete floor serves as a source of heat in winter, while concrete stays cool in summer. Rainwater is collected to flush toilets and irrigate the landscape. The refinished coating material achieves the look and feel of concrete without the need for expensive, environmentally unfriendly ready-poured concrete.
As a family home, the extension of the house and garden enhances the potential for working from home, and the glass corridor leading to the main lounge has proven to be a good buffer. Customers can work from home non-stop while their children play in the garden or entertainment venue. In its spacious suburban neighborhood, the new building cleverly blends contemporary family life with the architectural remains of a famous era. The versatile design embodies the principles of kinship, focusing on the connection to landscape and flexible living, while also enhancing existing homes.
