The common type in Singapore is a semi-detached house, which is a house that shares a block of boundary walls with a neighbour, which is actually only allowed to have one front on the outside, and this tends to be only a few metres away from the neighbours.

It is an architectural response to what customers present for a multi-generational small family home that allows its members and other family and friends to share and enjoy the rich public areas without impeding their privacy. It is a balanced approach that makes maximum use of allowable building envelopes and represents the maximum volume as the outer “epidermis”, while creating as much high-quality space as possible inside its compact venue.

These two-sided clear concrete walls serve as solid side wings, containing spatial planning, while the porosity and privacy on the street front are balanced, utilizing frontal shielding and green to organically present the front of the house, as a contrast (and complement) on both sides of strict and controlled behavior. Green plantings in a naturally ventilated cut between the toilet and the clear concrete wall provide an environmental filter for cross ventilation, which in turn helps create a meaningful connection to the outdoor space lacking in the existing site.
The concept of the interior layout revolves around creating an air well that captures as much natural light and air as possible, creating a naturally ventilated cutout by pulling the main living space and bedroom off the clear concrete wall. This approach organizes as much internal space as possible around this air well and internalizes those spaces, focusing on making use of the few things that are still very free but very important on a small lot — light and air — while also maintaining the privacy of the neighbors.
