What happens when the word “functional family apartment” and “design-centric hotel feel” are used in the same design requirement? Doria Apartment at Studio Prineas is a project dedicated to achieving this goal. Located in Sydney's waterfront suburb of Double Bay, Doria Apartment uses an existing 1990s shell and embeds the depth of experience typically offered to five-door homes in luxury hotels. It is a transformation that incorporates both aspects of customer presentations and combines them into a family-oriented space that exudes elegance and comfort.
Like many typical family homes, the living room of the apartment connects itself to the kitchen, however, this is done through a mirrored portal to introduce some of the hotel-like charm that customers want. Also located outside the kitchen is a secondary, more casual dining area, which takes the form of long chairs, again paying homage to a more hotel-like concept. The watermill island-style bench is bold and mature, providing not only a place for cocktails, but also a place for the client's three children to do homework. Modern family amenities such as TVs, games, and the endless clutter of daily life are elegantly hidden within the walls of the entire family cabinet. Studio Prineas references typical hotel design, taking advantage of these moments to adapt to modern family life while maintaining a sense of luxury.
Lots of different types of mirrors and reflective dials elevate this space while also interestingly reflecting light into inaccessible areas. The smoky mirror cabinet in front of the large window in the living room reflects the peach-colored curtains to illuminate the living room with warm, unencumbered light. The mirror backing of the fine carpentry unit introduces a more boundless feel to the apartment, which occupies a small floor area. Various thresholds are lined with metal or mirrors, elevating the previously ordinary opening to a more special design.
