Alexander & Co.'s renovation of an existing home on Sydney's North Shore is the epitome of bold design, from scale to material selection to sustainability.

Sydney-based interior design studio Alexander & CO. doesn't just respond to design requests. They believe that every project—every space—has something to say, whether residential or otherwise; they call it “the spirit of place.” The spirit of Spotted Gum House is typified by innovation and exploration. Customers themselves play a key role in the homes with forward-looking sustainable design features, while Alexander & CO. The team explores the relationship between the past and the future.

The house has a two-story rear extension to an early 20th century residence. Each part of the house — the repaired front, the new upstairs and the new downstairs — is designed in a unique architectural language to simplify the process. The lower level of the rear extension includes a spacious, open common area with a kitchen, restaurant and living area with high ceilings. The first floor is a private living area with master bedroom, steam shower and built-in infrared sauna. The original front of the house comfortably has two rooms, a study, a living room, a guest bathroom, a dressing room and a laundry room.

Perhaps the most important aspect of this change is the shift to a more environmentally friendly design and lifestyle. Through the building's commitment to personal health and sustainability, customers are key drivers behind home sustainability, some of which include: lighting systems, geothermal control, double-glazed windows, and low-risk organic materials. “Each of these components is critical to maintaining the integrity and excellence of the design,” Jeremy said. Helping to guide this focus on sustainability is landscape designer Hugh Burnett, who pioneered the design of gardens that “keep up with the times.”
