Partially embedded in a sloping site, the residence isolates well from the extreme climate of Central Otago and corresponds to the characteristics of the landscape. Covered with rocks and walls, it speaks the architectural language of the area with a contemporary style.
Unifying internal and external architecture is an ongoing interest of Bureaux. Here, the architectural experience and sense of timelessness are amplified by careful material specifications and attention to light, shadow and texture. The entrance experience is similar to entering finely crafted woodwork — the floors, walls, and ceilings are all covered in a variety of oaks, with custom window seats, and silver or black marine limestone. As a full-service project, Bureaux designed most of the furniture and carefully specified or commissioned all other furniture and items—including pottery.
