Mitsuori Architects architectural firm responds to the family's existing legacy and comes up with a series of interesting and interwoven forms. As a fusion of parts, characters and history, Northcote House bridges the differences of the family era, creating moments of cohesion.
The extension of Northcote House — an existing heritage home in Northcote — is both a formal expression and a modern expression. The need to expand the original Victorian dwellings stems from the multi-generational nature of its occupants. The architectural design of the house responds to the gathering of families and depicts the new and old volumes of the dwelling, reflecting the needs of the client. Mitsuori Architects uses the character of its residents and the existing charm of the family to create a unique architectural response.
Northcote House is generously open to the surrounding natural elements, bringing the movement together at the back of the house. To ensure that the existing elevation remains unchanged, the extension is hidden in the landscape — spread over two floors and away from pedestrians. In keeping with the modern approach to open living, the volume expands the existing height and space, while the combination of large windows allows natural light to penetrate into the house and allow the view outward — expanding the perceptual area of the home.
Northcote House both dynamically contrasts and complements its different eras. Expose the original red brick outside, add parts away from the traditional form, connected by glass elements. Glass windows give a feeling of relaxation in their overall form and provide a clear boundary between volumes.
