When Canadian architect Omar Gandhi set out to design a forest retreat in the Gaspereau River Valley, the Gaspereau Valley was a popular four-season destination for skiing, hiking, biking, and wine tourism in Nova Scotia, where his goal was to create a “meditation meditation for family, friends and colleagues. The Place,” allowing them to disconnect, relax, and refocus after the pandemic. The property sits on a steep rocky slope above a valley, reached by winding paths through the forest, perfect for this wish. Through his eponymous firm Omar Gandhi Architects, Omar Gandhi eschewed the common A-frame, wood-frame type, and designed a weather-resistant steel-covered cube located on four long columns.
The cottage's vivid forbidding design injects an atmosphere of mystery and introspection into the interior, while its textured brownish-orange exterior blends harmoniously with the forest setting. The result is an architecturally refined “tranquil forest resort” that fosters a deeper level of connection with nature and loved ones. Inspired by traditional hunting huts and shutters, the lodge takes the form of four large boxes on stilts, with a smaller entrance volume below which secures the structure to the site. The building adopts a bold modern design, but cleverly evokes the essence of the chalet thanks to the horizontal stripes of corrugated Corten steel overlay. The volume of the cube is interrupted by large windows that allow you to enjoy magnificent views of the valley, where the widest windows are highlighted by a metal canopy of weathered steel, providing shade. The stark minimalism of the exterior continues in the home, although the smoky oak finish, neutral tones, and a mix of modern and antique furniture softens the colors. The cottage is divided into two floors, the lower level is a private area and the upper is an open living and dining area. The interior is characterized by a calm atmosphere based on a minimalist aesthetic and natural presence, thanks to the large floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to enjoy the forest views outside.
