Made from strict site boundaries and managed by a conservative residential environment in the historic district, Inglis Architects has created two detached homes with different identities but with cohesion on one site. Overcoming initial resistance to modern architectural forms in a fundamentally unchanged streetscape, the resulting design draws influence from the language of the surrounding houses, while maintaining a firm uniqueness. Ambitious to the challenge, the architectural enclosures form a rhythmic language throughout the site, reflecting the proportions and symmetries found in direct and broader settings.
Charlie Inglis, director of Inglis Architects, recalls: “Our clients came in contact with us, they were familiar with our work and were delighted to be able to experience our designs.” As a recently fun-loving empty-nested elder, the client's requirements are very clear — the first-floor apartment is small in size, connected to the garden, broadens the perception of space, while the upper floor apartment has the same balanced treetop view. “The important thing is that these apartments are not typical,” Charlie Inglis explained, “the emphasis is on the same proportion of space as you would find in a big house.” The uncluttered spatial craftsmanship inspired by this narrative creates a feeling of generosity and breadth, starting with a separate entrance point to each dwelling.
Using compact flooring and encouraging external connectivity as much as possible, the ground-floor apartment reveals an eye-popping new “short trip” into the family center. Destined to reject the common concept of spatial arrangement, the planning is flipped, avoiding passing through private areas, but instead bringing guests into an exquisitely crafted entrance gate into a compressed transition area that separates bustling streets from quiet homes. Sport is propelled through this space into an unexpectedly large living area, wrapped on three sides by the garden, immersed in natural light. Charlie Inglis makes the most of single-storey planning and explains: “Ground floor dwellings allow space and function to blend, helping to make the overall feel.”
