For years, a family living in Sydney has enjoyed holidays in a small prefabricated house on a waterfront lot, but the end family members have outgrown it. They want to improve living conditions, make better use of space, while maintaining a relaxed and simple living pattern.
The design response is to preserve the open and frenzied nature of the site, and allow the enclosure structure of the house to provide privacy, security and protection from the elements, in effect the house is like a fence. The desire for modest displays on the street propelled the idea of the house as a weathered object in the sand dunes. The sloping roof form is covered with pre-weathered mottling, referencing windblown, clipped plantings, and keeping the sun on neighboring properties.
The volume of the house is divided by the yard and the boundary conditions are carefully treated to provide a variety of spaces and atmospheres to adapt to the constant changes. The large openable wooden screen can easily adjust light and shadow, privacy and channels. The mass has pushed from the local streetscape behind the venue, and the connection to the waterfront is immediately at the heart of attracting families. In this regard, a sea view is established from the front door, through the living room, shaped like a corridor facing something. Plan the arrangement to reduce the use of the house by separating additional bedrooms, making it equally comfortable for 2 and 10 people. Like the local Oystercatcher population, this family chose to nest in the dunes of Javits Bay in white.
