Union Street Residence is a residence located in Northcote, Australia, designed by Prior Barraclough. Union Street Residence is an addition to Northcote Worker's Cottage, designed for retired couples looking for a smaller city-centric residence. The expansion includes a kitchen, restaurant and living area on the first floor, and a mezzanine study on the first floor. The architecture is characterized by purposeful surface integration and hidden functional components. Designed to adapt to its environment, the surface seamlessly combines stairs, entertainment units, kitchens and wet areas through a series of well-thought-out pleats. As a structural support, loop path, and separation element, it guides movement and space planning within the home while building backyards and skyscapes.
Internally, the sloping ceiling blends well with the layout, giving space definition to the open layout. The bottom is aligned with the widest part of the layout to create a comfortable living space, while the dining, kitchen and study areas become more vibrant as the ceiling reaches its highest point. AUSTRALIAN HARDWOODS ARE ARRANGED ON THE SURFACE, HIGHLIGHTING THE CHANGING LIGHT OF THE DAY AND SOFTENING THE FOLDED GEOMETRY. The regular splicing grid hides all doors and adds an element of surprise for visitors to explore the house. In contrast to wood, the secondary space uses materials such as stainless steel in the kitchen and glazed mosaic tiles in humid areas. The operability of the surface also affects the atmosphere of the space. When opened, it creates a lively, informal setting, and when closed, it presents a minimalist space without family clutter.
