A couple left the city with a young daughter in search of more space, and they contacted Feldman Architecture to design a new house — a modern, secluded residence with a dedicated reception area for family and friends. At Coal Creek Open-Air Space Preserve, this team's vision focuses on immersing visitors fully in the rolling hills while offering a rare, remote view of northern San Francisco Bay. Central to the design is to thoughtfully orient the landscape of public and private living spaces while creating a sense of privacy from nearby venues. The 320 ㎡ l-shaped building stands on the eastern slope, creating a fence for outdoor moments and framing the expansive view from the indoor living space.
The master suite overlooks the northern bay, which is important for customers that this roof deck is open without compromising bedroom privacy. Low-maintenance, durable materials define the material palette: the exterior cement layer on the second tier, and the Monterey wood sideboard, elegantly connecting the main floor over time. Cement, plaster, and cypress strips are stacked together geometrically.
