Residential renovation project designed for a couple and three children, located in the city center. The owner wants to have three separate bedrooms, as well as a large and bright common space shared by five. The house is characterized by the fact that the windows are concentrated on the south side, and the functionality required by the customer is difficult to obtain from daylight. Therefore, we tried to solve this problem by expanding the balcony features that are unique to houses in Chinese buildings.
The so-called balcony, generally refers to the 1 meter wide space formed between the room and the window, although it occupies the best position for sunlight, but for privacy reasons, the curtains are drawn even during the day. In addition, due to the small area of the balcony, in many cases it can only serve as a secondary function as a cloakroom, storage room, etc. The architect arranged the common functions of the kitchen, restaurant, living room on the south side of the interior by the window, used it as a large balcony, and separated the bedroom from the common area with glass and curtains. The bright hall in the public space was spacious and ensured coexistence with a separate and sufficiently bright private space.
Lighting limitations and planning issues arising from this project are common problems in residential conversion in China. This program aims to provide a universal way of planning housing for urban housing in China.
