Overlooking the Royal Botanic Gardens in South Yarra, this iconic Modernist building was completed in 1962 by renowned architect Robin Boyd and is one of Melbourne's longest-built apartment buildings. Located on a high floor, Domain Park Flats is a 150 ㎡ apartment renovated into a modern family home by local design and construction company S&K.

S&K Director Paul Kegen explains that the client's request is to create a neutral and minimalist space where you can enjoy endless views of the city. In addition, the client wants to open the kitchen and living space and create a suite in the master bedroom, which is not part of the original design of the apartment. This project is an example of modern living in a historic enclosure. Optimizing important everyday uses such as storage, multi-use space and a connected home life is an important consideration.

The interior, in warm neutral tones, cleverly punctuates the surrounding views, while the wood finish connects the entire apartment's wardrobes, carpentry and kitchen, providing a sense of unity. In the kitchen and bathroom, the textured stone surface is juxtaposed with neutral porcelain, creating a simple and elegant contrast. The designers wrapped functions such as the cooker hood in stone to match the splash-proof plate in the kitchen, avoiding too much visual attention to the space. In the living room, the designer used mirrors on the display of fine carpentry to enhance the depth of the apartment and enhance the view below the hall.

In the master bedroom, custom partitions take the form of low-height fine woodwork with built-in seats that provide additional drawer storage space without closing the space. In some ways, it is a mini walk-in wardrobe. By creating this feature, designers want to provide additional storage space while ensuring that the north view and sunlight are preserved. Balanced and simple living spaces flow together in a harmonious continuum, effortlessly coexisting with the modernism of the buildings and the aesthetics of the distant city.
