CKR Residence is a minimalist residence in Sydney, Australia, designed by STUDIO-LIU. Driven by a commitment to minimalism and purposeful design, the project aims to embody the spirit of “less is more.” The design concept of CKR Residence is rooted in simplicity and intentionality, aiming to be a beacon of sustainable and caring living.

Inspired by James Turrell's ingenious use of light and space, STUDIO-LIU carefully designed this home, prioritizing the flow of space and the careful arrangement of form, furniture, and materials. This strategy makes living spaces not only visually appealing, but also filled with a sense of calm and tranquility, expressed through soft color and subtle textural contrasts.

The mission brief is simple: a young five-door house seeks a quiet refuge that reflects the understated elegance of European design while blending in with the surrounding natural environment. TO DO THIS, STUDIO-LIU HAS MOVED AWAY FROM ITS TRADITIONAL RELIANCE ON DECORATIVE ITEMS AND HAS CHOSEN TO FOCUS ON DURABLE NATURAL MATERIALS SUCH AS MARBLE, PLASTER, WOOD AND METAL. This emphasis emphasizes the home's commitment to longevity and defies the trend of ephemeral design and decoration. By adopting the concept of “less is more”, the design rejects the idea that luxury and excellence must come from excess. Emphasis is placed on functionality, the importance of sustainable materials, and the integration of natural light and airflow to create a home that proves purposeful design and simplicity.

This commitment to minimalism goes beyond aesthetic considerations to address the practical issues of sustainability and waste in interior design, particularly the challenges of disposable furniture and the environmental impact of large-scale production. IN PURSUIT OF A MORE SUSTAINABLE APPROACH, STUDIO-LIU HAS INTEGRATED CIRCULAR DESIGN PRINCIPLES THAT BLEND VINTAGE ITEMS WITH LOCAL HANDMADE PRODUCTS TO REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT ASSOCIATED WITH TRANSPORTATION. Material selection prioritizes natural rather than synthetic materials and emphasizes sustainable sourcing from wood to natural stone, which not only enhances the beauty of the home, but also helps create a healthier living environment.
