Lawless & Meyerson's latest project feels like the designer's gentle, quiet, and forceful gesture. Housed in Sydney's iconic landmark Finger Pier, this historic gem has been carefully transformed into an elegant oasis of city waterfront living, and the designer and her team have cleverly injected new life into its heritage architecture. The original structure was built between 1910 and 1915 by the Sydney Harbour Trust, and due to strong public opposition, Finger Pier narrowly escaped demolition in the late 1980s. It is reborn into a vibrant hotel district of boutique hotels, apartments and marinas. The heritage and cultural significance of the former passenger terminal is deeply rooted in the city's history, making it a valuable local landmark. The Pier Apartments were originally built in the late 1990s and have lost some of their appeal over the years. However, in 2023, they are highly sought after due to their unique personality, spectacular views and central location between the CBD and Potts Point.
“The client came to us with a tight budget and a clear idea,” says the designer. “He just bought a two-bedroom apartment and wanted to renovate. The client's vision is clear: within budget constraints, create a spacious, flexible home for daily living, work, and entertainment, while maintaining calm, bright colors that exude a holiday-like atmosphere. The steel trusses, the riveted wrought beams, the original windows, and of course the landscape, gave us a lot of work,” says the designer. “We wanted to create a quiet, calm design and take advantage of the beauty of the existing characters. The design team faces the inherent challenge of working with heritage-listed sites, and they need to comply with various regulations to transform the space. Structural elements such as lowered ceilings expose magnificent steel trusses, thereby increasing the ceiling height of the seating area. Lawless & Meyerson cleverly combined the master bathroom and the small second bathroom/laundry while preserving the historic integrity of the building.
One of the highlights of the decoration is the clever way of separating the bedroom. Inspired by boutique hotels, white steel and glass doors with thick linen curtains were installed, creating a flexible space that can be opened or closed as desired. This method ensures that you can enjoy the view of the harbor from every corner of the apartment. The overall choice of materials and finishes reflects a commitment to lightness and elegance. Wall-to-wall carpeting is replaced by lime oak parquet flooring, and Savannah marble brightens up the kitchen, creating a serene backdrop with a white-dominated hue. The living area features a simple linen sofa, complemented by canvas and chrome-plated Knoll Wassily chairs, and comes with custom swordtail rugs. The spacious, well-lit and peaceful home created by this evokes a timeless holiday feeling.
