On an ordinary street in South Australia, Gram Studio's latest project is a very prominent project that is what their clients seek by introducing a very Californian aesthetic in comparison to the surrounding environment. The couple — a winemaker, a photographer — have a young son and a soon-to-be-born son who need a family home to accompany them growing up. In the original structure, with four bedrooms, a suite and a family bathroom, the Studio Gram extension adds laundry, kitchen, living and dining areas for family use. A series of courtyards are filled with ample light, providing not only light for residents, but also for the large number of plants and cacti that live in them.
Gram Studio: “What drives the core design is the excess desire for natural light, light, and direct visual connection to the home.” Working with landscape designer Emma Sadie Thompson, Gram Studio manages to introduce a garden-centered home aesthetic into the interior. Welcoming into the residence through a series of courtyards, carefully selected sculptural plants are exhibited from the inside, made up of the architecture, with an almost gallery-like charm. Indoors, white goes well with the soft wood used on window frames and bold exposed ceiling beams. These spaces have a pretty cozy feel; they make you want to curl up in front of the arched window, read a good book, have a cup of iced tea, and spend an afternoon. The transformation also includes transforming existing garden sheds into plant breeding stations and photography studios.
“The evolution of the garden and the increase in workspace have created a functional and beautiful living environment for the home,” explains the design team at Gram Studios. Borrowing from Palm Springs architecture and garden-centered aesthetics, this classic suburban home stands out in sunny California where, as Gram Studio describes, “everything an Australian home should have—sturdy, relaxing, full of authentic personality.” For a house of four, it is a family home full of personality that can be lived from the inside to the outside.
