Hsu McCullough | Los Angeles San Fernando Valley Mountain View Villas

This is a gazebo-style ridge villa located on a hillside in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles. Designed by owners and architects Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough, the villa overlooks the eastern side of the protected park and the San Fernando Valley, while embracing its terrain and providing a sense of “refuge” for the family.

Peggy Hsu and Chris McCullough are attracted by the hillside setting, connection to nature and sense of privacy. As Peggy Hsu says, “The area is on a hillside with low population density, and most of the properties have deep backyards. Our room offers an unforgettable view of Fossil Ridge Park — it is never developable, and there are no homes, only a natural landscape of hillside oaks and unique wildlife.

The back of the ridge villa shows a clear connection with the landscape, while the front elegantly meets the need for privacy and natural light. Large wooden sunshades penetrate the entire structure to block the room facing the street, leaving it free from the intrusion of pedestrians. The screen is made of western red snowflake, and its height mimics the height of neighboring houses, integrating the building into the surrounding environment. The garage is covered with recycled rough sawdust, located on the left side of the property, securing the house and providing visual relief to the wooden planks vertical above.
Driven by stratified matter, there is a clear and purposeful link between the internal and external. Notably, the smooth charcoal plaster and reclaimed wood coatings continue inside, guiding the arrival order and creating a popular continuity. THIS SENTIMENT IS ALSO REFLECTED ON THE IRREGULAR SHAPED SLABS THAT EXTEND INSIDE AND OUTSIDE UNDER THE FOOT. All in all, as Peggy Hsu says, the dark palette creates a “cave-like cocooned space that is comfortable inside, but also allows natural light to reflect into the space.”
