West End Renovation is a minimalist style residence in Toronto, Canada, designed by Akb Architects. In the main living area, Akb Architects cleverly rearranged the layout, creating a flow of space, transitioning from formal to relaxed surroundings. The entrance has a spacious entrance hall with a cozy fireplace and a hidden cloakroom. Next to a cocktail lounge with a striking black stone fireplace designed for quiet gatherings. Adjacent is a unique room with a striking black granite bar counter, carefully crafted into an architectural highlight. The dining area is located in the center of the residence, naturally lit through the skylight and transitioned into a sunken family activity room.

HERE, THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE INTERIOR AND THE LUSH BACKYARD IS BLURRED BY LARGE AREAS OF GLASS WINDOWS AND LINEAR FIREPLACES. The kitchen is adjacent to the family activity room, extending this link to the outdoors. Large glass doors lead to the deck and seating area, set amidst mature trees. Indoors benefit from plenty of natural light and leaves provide natural shade. Akb Architects uses a monochrome color scheme to link spaces together. White oak flooring and handmade furniture contrast sharply with black design elements. In the family activity room, the linear fireplace is made of hot rolled steel, while in the restaurant, a black chandelier designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune hangs above a custom-made white oak table.

The kitchen continues this theme with a matte black countertop and rear fenders, integrating the storage solution, maintaining the minimalist aesthetic of the space. The design of the house also pays attention to the dynamics of space. Traditional areas have lower ceilings, while open concept spaces are characterized by lowered floor levels, increased ceiling heights and connections with sloping backyards. This design approach upends the typical use of space, adds a sense of grandeur and elevates the level of daily family activities.
