In one of the oldest streets in Paris, a former wooden workshop has been replaced by an innovative two-storey apartment for a newlywed couple. Heju is a Parisian architecture studio that combines Japanese and Scandinavian styles, in charge of managing this renovated apartment located on the St. Anthony Street in Paris.
The last renovation of the building was in the 1970s, and the state of the building was unexpected: it needed remodeling and renovation. It is worth noting that now there are no stairs connecting the two floors, the second floor is not suitable for living, and the style element has long been outdated. On the structure, there is a lot of work to be done, and the space is small (100 square meters, to be exact). Priority is given to the development of functional, inconspicuous stairs: a feat in a tight space. So there was a clever idea to hang the stairs above the kitchen and use the countertop as a platform.
The innovative staircase provides facilities to the open ground floor, including a kitchen, dining area and living room. A tall cabinet enters the kitchen on one side and hides the cupboards and dressing room on the other to optimize space and increase traffic. Talking geometry, simple jagged staircase lines and arched bookcases in the living room form elements of style and contrast. Hélène points out that this handmade bookcase “highlights the customer's passion for craftsmanship and enhances the poetic atmosphere of the place.”
