Terlizzi Home is a secluded family villa immersed in a lush landscape of trees, borrowing former modernist principles, becoming more open and integrated with the surrounding natural environment. Piechota Architecture focuses on creating external connections by adding new, spacious glass around the perimeter.
Located in Los Gatos, California, the villa is set amidst picturesque woodland, originally designed and built in the 60s of the 20th century, requiring a modern makeover to ensure its relevance to a more modern environment. Inspired by the surrounding environment, the final residence balances the interior and exterior of natural and architectural elements, restores key features, and gives full consideration to how they will evolve over time. Due to some unnecessary additions over the years, the house needs to regain its inherent narrative; the main challenge is to cleverly, purposefully organize the past and the present together. Piechota Architecture draws inspiration from the open attitude and the existing connections within, reinterpreting these to adapt to a more modern architectural style.
Maintaining a continuous dialogue with the surrounding environment is key to ensuring synergy between nature and architecture. To support the various features outlined in the planning, open and glazed areas (including living areas, dining and kitchen areas) are balanced with more private bedroom and bathroom spaces. Matching the energy of existing owners, providing opportunities to party and relax is crucial, and the space's ability to adapt over time to a variety of family arrangements is also important. Outside are a series of entertainment and rest areas, as well as a swimming pool. Strengthens the connection between the interior and exterior and allows freedom of movement across thresholds, ensuring an increase in the available area of the dwelling. Outdoor space becomes its own sphere, allowing family activities to flow outward. Set in the same beautifully decorated landscape, the villa further softens the exterior through the balance between rigid and soft ornamentation and surrounding greenery creating a sense of structure and formality.
