Balancing striking southern views with warm interior features, Grandview House overcomes its former self-limitations. DESIGNED BY IAN BENNETT STUDIOS, THE PROJECT EMBODIES A CLEVER MAKEOVER OF AN EXISTING FAMILY HOME. Located on the south side of Mona Vale Cape, Grandview House once existed as a cold and unpopular residence with little sunlight. Ian Bennett Design Studio designed the home into a light-filled resort that takes full advantage of the views of Mona Vale Beach, Long Reef and Manly. The design presentation allows for great creative freedom, providing only for open dwellings with maximum solar penetration; ideal for family life.
Originally taking a curved form, Grandview House has been reconfigured by Ian Bennett design studio to provide a more comfortable, freer living experience. The open form broadens the view, softens the sense of transition between spaces, and encourages residents to roam the property. The exhilarating form also provides extensive architectural canvases for mesmerizing sunlight projection. Eastern and Western carefully designed openings introduce natural light into the home — just like a hole inserted in a sunshade — the shutters maximize cross ventilation.
With limited materiality, Grandview House adopts a powerful palette that responds to coastal climates. Amorphous concrete is able to withstand erosion, maintain the structural integrity of the house, and give an elegant shine over time. The hard surface also offers surprising visual softness, proving its reasonableness for use in a family home. Black aluminum is also characteristic, along with the characteristic Caesar stone: it stands out in the kitchen. Together, these three materials suggest a simple and unpretentious dwelling that attracts residents with its tactile features.
