This Japanese-style inn is located in the heart of Manly, just in front of the famous Manly Beach, an iconic Australian beach frequented by tourists, surfers and volleyball players. The building was originally a two-story Victorian-style tavern built in the late 18th century. Over the years, two additional floors were built at the top, transforming it into a four-story mixed-use building with shops and apartments on the ground floor.
The floor plan was not thought through before the Dform Projects redesign... there wasn't too much gorgeous Manly sun entering the apartment. This, combined with complex pipelines, presents challenges for architects in need of creative design solutions. The architect demolished the walls of the bedroom to allow natural light to penetrate deeper into the apartment, and moved the bathroom away from the entrance. They also opened up kitchen, living and dining spaces, combining them into a larger overlapping area. Floor-to-ceiling wood introduces an “exterior”, enhances the apartment's “natural” feel and pays homage to the beautiful surroundings as requested by customers to create a “unique experience”. This feeling is evident from the first entry point where beauty and function meet.
