Rice Barn House's design is driven primarily by responding to the environmental conditions of the site and celebrating the heritage of local traditional architecture. Given a compact plot of land and a brief description of the client so that there is enough space in the house, the designer's approach aims to blend Indonesian rural architecture with contemporary architectural techniques to adapt to today's lifestyle. Therefore, the design incorporates vernacular by using elements from lumbung padi (Indonesian rice granary), combining modern material choices.
The shape of the villa is inspired by the lumbung padi, whose structure is built on 4 pillars and the ground floor rises 2 meters above the ground. Traditional barn houses are characterized by two floors and are often built with a contrasting quality of space — the ground floor as an open gazebo and the first floor as an enclosed private space. Designers link these spatial qualities to the layout of living elements.
The arched roof design from lumbung padi has been modified into a trapezoidal prism to accommodate private items such as bedrooms and private bathrooms. The prism-shaped roof is broken in the center by a circular skylight, and the trapezoidal sloping walls are broken by window openings to provide natural light and allow ventilation of the entire private area of the crossing and stacking.
Below is an open-plan living room, connected by a central spiral staircase. The living room is surrounded by frameless double-folding doors, blurring the boundary between outside and inside. Surrounded by continuous terraced forms and plantings, the living room mimics the openness of the lumbung padi gazebo, allowing as much natural wind as possible to pass from all sides. With the transformation of today's lifestyle, access to natural ventilation is considered an important factor in quality of life, which enhances the openness of the quality of living room space.
