GOB 17 is a simple residence in Valencia, Spain, designed by DG Arquitecto. The design revolves around a family, including a couple and their playful puppy, who decide it's time to change their way of life. They shifted from structured American medieval aesthetics to embracing the stratified history and culture of the Mediterranean. The first step in their journey is to find the right location, emphasizing the importance of choosing a property before making any permanent decisions to avoid unforeseen constraints. Their search ended up finding a unique property in the historic area of Valencia, close to the Turia River Park. Known for its prime location and dual main facade, this 19th-century aristocratic building contrasts sharply with the orderly grid layout peculiar to Manhattan, designed to ensure uniform light and air quality but limit architectural creativity.
The redesign project aims to coordinate the various elements of the building, ensuring visual connectivity and fluidity. It introduces two major volumes that not only welcome but guide the eye of the observer, blending the city look with the green interior of the courtyard. This approach respects the original structure, keeping it visible and integrated with the new design. The choice of materials embodies the balance between tradition and modernity. The original structure features a matte white finish that gives it a timeless quality and helps balance its visual weight. Instead, the new additions feature modern simplicity, supported by natural material palettes. These include furnished oak veneers, terracotta straw trim floors, and ivory quartz rocks that go well with wood and white walls.
